Course objectives

General

  1. Examine the philosophical bases for the right to privacy and right to know information
  2. Compare and contrast professional codes of ethics and Jewish legal codes on the subject of confidentiality

Specific

  1. Clarify when confidential information can, should and should not be publicized, according to current professional and Jewish codes
  2. Analyze how Jewish ethical approaches address issues not covered by professional rules of conduct, as well as establishes rules for laymen

  1. What degree of benefit or harm requires divulging confidential information?
  2. Who holds the privilege of deciding when to divulge confidential communications?
  3. What is the status of confidential information obtained by third parties?
  4. Resolving conflicts between religious and a secular laws regarding confidentiality
