[1] The word “Gaon” was an official title of honor conferred upon the sages who headed either of the three Babylonian Torah academies in the cities of Sura, Pumbedisa, and Neharda’ah between the late 6^th century and early 11^th century C.E.. Hence, this era is known as the Gaonic period.
