[1] The word Gaon was an official title of honor conferred upon the sages who headed either of the three Babylonian Torah academies in the cities of Sura, Pumbedisa, and Nehardaah between the late 6th century and early 11th century C.E.. Hence, this era is known as the Gaonic period.
